Just wanted to throw this out there.... Looking for opinions pertaining to Jeeps specifically. I'm not looking to change what I have right now but might be convinced to down the road. I have a factory CJ TF999 in my scrambler. I like it mainly because I use it as a daily driver and always seem to have a cup of coffee in my hand. I know that's a poor excuse for a wheeler...

I'm going to be working, WITH not for, Red Head, yes that was meant for you Valerie!... on getting her jeep on the road and a transmission needs to be installed. It will be a manual and probably an NV3500. I have always liked sticks for off road and once it's in I may find myself wanting one for the Scrambler. Maybe a NV4500... After all the Scramblers is a man jeep! Ok I'm going to pay for that one...

I like sticks in my hotrods, auto's in my 4x4. A PROPERLY built auto can do some amazing things and then you only have 2 pedals to worry about. :D

I say drive it like yer s'posed to... Stick. No place for an auto except for the handy capped. I have yet to see were an auto would be better than a stick, unless you left femur is broken or your right arm...

Autos are good fo the mud boggs and motor homes. But I would drive it untill it needs to be swaped.

I personally like to drive a manual. But I have found with a family it is easier with an Automatic. Plus, my wife refuses to drive a stick, so I don't have much choice.

lol

there should be a whipped smiley somewhere, can't find it.

Stick for me, even taught the wife how to drive it so she could drive the Dodge and trade up the Chrysler for the Jeep.(confused much?)

Autos are good on the drag strip due to their consistency, but I think true racing has corners going both ways.

I don't even see why Nascar cars have stick shifts, personally. They never shift out of top gear when they're racing....may as well use an auto with the same ratio that can handle the power. Eliminate the need for a clutch, and allow a power increase to make up for the added power loss the auto slushbox makes.

but i digress....manual all the way, I like to feel like i'm in control of my vehicle, that's why I'll never buy a newer Land Rover with their computer controlled offroad settings. can't wait for the Defender to come back though...

For real though! The both have their places but I have seen more Autos burn up on the trail with no way to get back. I have toasted manuals and no mater how bad they have been I could always limp her home. It might be beyond repair but I was home.

I have driven both but prefer manuals I feel like I have more control over the vehicle.

That's backwards... a built automatic in a hot rod will out do a stick anyday....

In 4x4 I will never drive anything other than a stick. I use to praise auto. Just put it in D and wheel.. but you got so much more control in a stick.

equally built rigs, one auto, one manual, which one gets up the obstacle first?

Are we racing??LOL

I will just say that each hold there own spots in 4x4ing were one out does the other, but for all around I'll take the manual.
74 Chevy - 4 speed manual
05 Tacoma - 6 speed manual
05 Civic - you guess it, 5 speed manual
You guys see a pattern here??LOL

Now for my opinion. I like sticks in sports cars. Had an auto in my 68 stang and did not like it. Had a stick in my Ranger. Did not like it. Had a stick in my Talon. Loved it. The Toyota and X have Auto simply because I do not have the patience and enough insurance to teach the wife how to drive a manual transmission. As far as offroad use I love the Auto. I can focus more on the trail and where I am going then adding Clutch in Gas out, Repeat as needed lol.

Use it enough and it becomes second nature. Reflex action, all that jazz. Start lugging, downshift. Start really hearing the engine, upshift, and you do it all subconsciously, full attention paid on where you're going.

Look at what the big boys use.......auto. BTW, I particularly looked for a manual in my truck, just knowing that it wasn't the optimum tranny for rock crawling, I haven't been able to tell a real difference in mud.

You mean IF I LET you work with me!! :sign bring it on:Silly little red head... When you stop giggling and want some help with that Wrangler let me know. Just don't start doing the little girl pouty face when you can't find me.... :nana:

And BTW..... I think that Jeep needs a muffler bearing. Call NAPA and order one up....

Right but that's rock crawling comp buggies, not in the same realm here. The only trail that the club currently runs where I could see a auto being an advantage would be Rainbow Creek, but that's one out of what nine?

Having owned both A/T's and M/T's, 4X4's and track cars, I've found M/T's to be lighter, cheaper, more reliable (as holeski stated earlier, you can always make it home), get better gas mileage (in most cases), and are safer (provides another method of stopping if breaks fail). Not to mention that down-shifting works so much better on ice/snow than braking.

If you're going with A/T's, it can only be for personal preference as far as I can see...or the wife.

Stick. But there are a few situations where an auto (properly built!) is better.

1. Dedicated rock crawler.
2. Dedicated drag racer.
3. Electric car/hybrid car (though technically, you really don't need a tranny at all).
4. Dedicated mud bogger (debatable...But I'll give autos the edge).
5. You're broken.

All myths! Not better, easier! Every reason I have heard for the above has been from absolute laziness, ignorance, or hear say.
