Well buy some RTV silicone. You can get it all at Shucks and get the military discount. I put Quaker State in mine. If you have a limited slip difff ( I dont think you do) you will need special fluid. While you are there you might want to just do the front and rear at the same time and make sure you have the same type up front. The gear oil is 80/90. Double check your owners manual though. Look for quantity. Probably 2-2.5 quarts per diff. Thats what mine is anyway. Its always good to have some extra laying around if you get to much. The shop opens at 1 can you be there then?
Moved to new thread.

Cuss Dodge. We will have to take a look at it and see if I bolt can go in there. If not you can silicone it and keep it from leaking. WE will see.

It was leaking before in New Mexico. It may have gone bad.

X,

Should I talk to NAPA about a new gasket for the front and back gear housings?

I have to give you credit. You do not hijack threads. You simply move them lol.

RTV is alot better than a gasket, and alot cheaper to boot.

As far as gear oil, go to Napa and buy there Arctic Gear Oil. 75w90, good for year round but has a pour point of -59! At the North Pole store go over to there oil rack and look at the very bottom right, comes in a gallon container like anti-freeze, it's white with a plain white and black label on, 17.99 per without discount, get two if your doing the front also.

Will do, is it synthetic or something?

Make sure you have access to a hand pump too, it'll be near impossible to get that can up high enough to pour into the diff fill port.

They should have something to work it at the auto shop. If not we can put it in a smaller container and then use a funnel. Do you really think he would need 2 gallons? I got 4 1 quarts and still have oil left and I did front and rear.

Dude, aren't you get a little personnal? Hand pump? get it up? fill the port? (My wife is laughing.)

Actually maybe not, I was thinking about how it took almost a full gallon to fill my 14 bolt. Look in the manual, it should have oil capacities...should. Maybe just get one gallon do the rear and if you have enough do the front? Yes Michael the oil is synthetic, good stuff..I have in the tranny, tcase, rear diff, and will put it in the front when I do the lockright.

You're not gonna simply replace the rubber plug with a bolt. But, you can buy aftermarket diff covers with threaded plugs.
Orange RTV is what you want for sealing the cover back on. blue will work, but orange is better for this application.
Definately go synthetic. I don't think Qstate makes a synthetic. Definately a performance upgrade with this.

Who around here carries them?

AAAHHHHH! Death to orange RTV! That stuff is one of my biggest pet peeves. Nice motor put together and the guy uses like 4 tubes of orange RTV!

I use Ultra Black or Ultra Grey. Both work great.

You can try Napa. But a 4x4 shop may be required. If you keep an eye on your fluid level, you can wait for mail order.

I've used black RTV before, but never saw it for sale. Mine came in a rebuild kit. If black is better, where's a good source?

I wouldnt necessarily go to a completely different diff cover. I would just silicone up the rubber diff fill plug once it is filled up.

Is they’re even anything wrong with the gears or is the diff just leaking?

As far as I know nothing is wrong with the gears....the diff is just leaking.

They sell all the colors of RTV at Napa just read what each one is for,for diff covers i usually use the blue rtv,i beleive you can get self tapping bolts for that drain plug if you know what size you need at Napa also.

They sell Ultra Black and Ultra Grey at Napa and sometimes Wal-Mart carries it. Normally Wal-Mart just has the regular silicone though.

I like the black or grey because it blends in with everything. I know it's a stupid reason

I honestly don't know. I've never felt it slip or have it act up in any way. It's just leaking and it needs to be fixed.

What a nasty job that is? I can't get the grease off me. Any hoop, the gears looked fine, there was a lot of black residue on the inside of the houseing. Cleaned it out some. Hopefully it won't leak anymore.

Mike also learned another valuable lesson. Putting gear oil in is easier if the spare tire is removed.....Just a ruff guesstimate I would say he has 4:88 or 4:90.

This coming from the guy who has 2 or 3 different sized and shaped sets of lug nuts on his rig. Man, undo one, stop change socket, take off another one, switch to another socket. :D

He's right though. But it wasn't that great a job to start with. I'm just hoping I fixed what I was trying to fix and didn't make it worse.

I know why I have 2 sets. The front is due to being Chevy/Jeep and the rear is original.....No but really its a theft deterant system in place. People can only get 2 tires vs 4 lol...
