26 Feb 06, 08:42 pm
so sometime this week i will be getting my "new" truck from kev, and joining the 70s club...
anyways

1975 chevy truck
3/4 ton with 1/2 ton axles
3:42 gears and a limited slip in the rear
350sb
th350 tranny
np203 tcase
2 inch lift
33" tires

almost as soon as i get the truck and all the parts i need acuired this is what will be happening!!!

chevy 327sb
holley truck avenger carb
sm465 manual transmission
np205 tcase

now i have some questions regarding the tcase and tranny swap...
am i going to need to do any driveline work, or will the old ones work with it???
the rear has a new driveshaft so im pretty parshal to keeping it...
forrest has a nice pedal setup im going to try and get from him so all i need from there are the linkages and what not...

so hopefully on wednesday or thursday i can start on the swap granted i get the tcase and tranny and stuff all lined up by then...

i do beleive i have an sm465 lying around my brown truck that will be choice for the swap and am about to acquire an np205 from highboy76 in a trade for some bucket seats... might also get some other 1/2 ton axles depending on the gear ratio...

all 4wd sm465s had the same spline count correct??? im a little hazy on this so maybe someone can pitch in their two cents...

There were 30 spline and 10 spline sm465s.

Was this the black bomber?

yes, and it lives. I personally witnessed it drive tonight, complete with new master cylinder installed.

AK20
27 Feb 06, 12:12 am
Yes sir, I pumped the brakes as they bled it!!

Two different spine counts, 10 being the most common...they only used the 32 spline for the last couple years. Drive lines will probely have to be reworked....465\205 is a short combo.

4x4_MMMH_4x4
27 Feb 06, 06:37 pm
tear:( that sucks... hopefully i have a 10 spline one sitting under my brown truck!!! and hopefully the driveshafts off the brown truck will work... if not im stuck with full time 4wd :S

welp got the truck today, didnt pass im but i told kev i would take care of it... my rides are almost up with my roomate so i decided to take it as is... well im having second thoughts after driving it about the spider gears being messed up... i think its the front driveshaft... its a common problem that they make the noise its making... my old blue truck did it and i replaced the spider gears and tcase in it before getting to the driveline!!! so if anyone has a driveline they will let me test out for a few itd be appreciated:D... but she runs great, looks like a 75 should (in a good way)... on pay day i gotta order some door locks for it, new speedo cable or speedo, and some misc gauges here and there... i think my buddy has a set of hood hinges to fix the racing hood approah:P all in all im really happy with it:D

327 is going in this weekend... anyone who wants to come over and help is more than welcome to!!! bring it on... brandon 3474284... oh i might need some help setting the distributer in and setting the rocker arms...

AK20
28 Feb 06, 09:42 pm
I'd love to help but....I work Saturday, and Sunday my motor should be going in!!! Good luck!

28 Feb 06, 09:47 pm
i may have to wait on this... i forgot... i have no money for oil... hahaha... oh and im almost out of gas!!! had a half a tank at 530 today and almost empty... god that 327 will be so much better on gas

AK20
28 Feb 06, 10:06 pm
If the gas guage even works correctly....:nana:

28 Feb 06, 10:16 pm
she goes up and she goes down!!! as far as im concerned she works!!! found some money chipping driveways and baby sitting  should be able to do to engine swap!!! does it matter if i put a flexplate off a 350 on a 327???

gamble71
28 Feb 06, 10:33 pm
nope, the 400 was the only one with a unique flwheel since it was externally balanced. the rest are the same.

4x4_MMMH_4x4
28 Feb 06, 10:35 pm
Score!!!

AK20
28 Feb 06, 10:39 pm
Isn't there different weights and placement of weights depending on the engine, like say using a 454 flywheel on a 350, some use heavier or lighter weights placed differently??? Does this make sense?

gamble71
28 Feb 06, 10:40 pm
yes, but the 400 is the only different smallblock, and the 454 the only externally balanced big block. All the rest of em are the same, internally balanced.

AK20
28 Feb 06, 10:44 pm
Ok I see, I'm just curious...so any internally balanced engine can share flywheels, and any externally balanced engine can do the same?

gamble71
28 Feb 06, 10:51 pm
well the only externally balanced chevy engines are the 400 and 454... and I don't know if they'll interchange. I don't think they will, but not sure. All the rest interchange :allrighty: And unlike ford I've never heard of em having 2 different flexplate sizes... but it's possible. Just use the 350 flexplate and starter to be sure.

AK20
28 Feb 06, 10:54 pm
Right on thanks for the info, end :hijacked:

Doesn't the 6.2 use it's own flexplate/flywheel?

gamble71
28 Feb 06, 11:09 pm
we're not discussing diesels. I don't know anything about the 6.2 except that it's a true boat anchor.

4x4_MMMH_4x4
01 Mar 06, 12:27 am
you werent thread jacking ak20, it was all pertaining my questing :D... this will deffinatly be happening on saturday before im baby sitting rofl... i wonder if my starter for the 327 flywheel will work... if they are the same gear teeth they should... and it would be a new starter... im wondering if i should just beef up the 75 and make it my DD/Trail Rig... seems like the easiest route to go now... but i find it hard to part with the brown truck...

ChevyKev
01 Mar 06, 11:25 am
6.2 does have it's own flywheel.
I finally checked my inbox!
I'm finally on line!

The gas gauage works, but the top half emties slower than the bottom - so at the 1/2 mark you really have just over 1/3.

Aa Ryan said - drivelines will need re-worked.

I may have a front driveshaft that will work - measure the length and let me know and I'll see what I have. If I have it it's yours.

Sat I am booked up.

If you need tech advice ont he rockers/valvves and distributor give me a call.

It was a sad day seeing that truck go bye bye the second time! Though Kris says if we end up with it again I can never again re-sell it!

01 Mar 06, 09:32 pm
lol shes not liking the cold... didnt start today :S wwell it did, and ran for a bit, and after about 10-15 minutes it died... almost started... might be the carb... almost like its a dumb choke deal... meh going to buy a carb at work on monday... edlebrock 1400 in stock, 299... score... should help it pass IM no problem!!! i will look at it tomorrow kev and get back to you!!! it stops better than my maroon truck did!!! its scary!!! i love the way it turns too!!! oh and i might have a lift kit for it to... trading for my bucket seats if highboy is game...

4x4_MMMH_4x4
01 Mar 06, 09:32 pm
also, 327 is off for this weekend... probably going to concentrate on getting the 350 running right for now...

4x4_MMMH_4x4
01 Mar 06, 10:35 pm
i might take apart the driveshaft and look at the splined part and make darn shure its the driveshaft... and double check the ujoints near the tcase... it seems like the noise is coming more from under the passengerish floorboard than anything... check the wear on the one funky double ujointed part and make sure its not binding up on itself... prolly just the slip joint!!!

ChevyKev
01 Mar 06, 10:38 pm
The choke sticks either open or closed. The rod is not connected on the bottem end. I was gonna fix that when I fixed the interior leak, but you took it and I forgot to mention that. Once it is running and warm, open the choke butterfly by hand and it will run fine.

The power steering on that rig is better than any I have ever had, period! I shoulda stolen that box and replaced it before sale lol wait, did I type that out loud?

Yes, that carb is the one you need.

4x4_MMMH_4x4
01 Mar 06, 10:41 pm
oh so that would explain the uhm cold starting too much fuel smell!!! geeze thanks buddy:P gah... i love the power steering... is the 2 inch lift the cause of the offset steering wheel??? i love the way it turns too... barely squeeks!!! figured out the door problem when i hit about 55 on the highway!!! ROFL!!! maybe i will stop by your house when your not busy and have you run a quick bead:D...

dude im in love... if i get my alpine deck from the bank its going to have one hell of a cd player... hahahaha... loving the am radio though... hopefully highboy will trade my bucket seats for his 6 inch lift and ill be in business:D

4x4_MMMH_4x4
02 Mar 06, 08:08 am
hrm not starting again... messed with the choke... hey kev is the writing on that switch for that aux tank right... switch to the right and its the right gas tank switch it to the left and its the left gas tank???

sevenslats
02 Mar 06, 08:14 am
Have you tried removing the front driveshaft, and listening for the noise while driving? That should help you trace down the problem.

4x4_MMMH_4x4
02 Mar 06, 08:15 am
full time 4wd... cannot do it like that:( anyways off to work i go buddies givin me a ride unwillingly rofl

4x4_MMMH_4x4
02 Mar 06, 06:23 pm
im almost deffinatly sure its out of gas even though the gas gauge says 1/8th of a tank... now at least ill know where to stop eh...

AK20
02 Mar 06, 10:30 pm
See what I was saying about the gas gauge!!!! Run a clear inline fuel filter between the carb and fuel pump, then next time your cranking on it forever just get out pop the hood and look to see if you got fuel coming up...This happened to me when I first got my 74, I drove home one day and parked in the driveway and all was fine. Next day I go to leave, start cranking and nothing. I'm like WTF? Ran fine yesterday, so after pumping the gas and cranking some more I finally poped the hood and waaalaaa! No fuel in the fuel filter, grabbed a 5 gallon jerry can out of the garage and filled her up...more pumping and cranking and bam, she fired up....for the record I've probely ran it out of fuel another half dozen times since then!!!!

4x4_MMMH_4x4
03 Mar 06, 12:29 am
tried starting it again, put about 4-5 gallons of gas in it... puttered hard for a little bit... jabbled my brains... it might be the choke... but im not sure if i wanna dump 300$ into a carb and it not work... i need to get ahold of kev to see how the gas tank switch works... someones homade deal... theres an aux setting and a main setting... it was on the aux when i got it so i dont know... maybe i will try switching it to the main one... and see what happens... dont wanna continue cranking it at 1230 am:P

ChevyKev
03 Mar 06, 08:00 am
As I mentioned, I never used the homemade aux tank - so I never moved the switch at all. I have driven it when the gas gauge was below the E line and I never ran it out. Most likely a choke prob. The choke rod is disconnected at the bottem (inside) of the carb. It had simply been stuck open - thus the hard starts. I have carbs here that might work but have no vac port for vac assist brakes. In 2 years I haven't had the kind of probs you are having! Sorry. I may be in town later, call my cell and I'll see if I can come take a look. She may just be mad that I sold her again!

4x4_MMMH_4x4
03 Mar 06, 07:43 pm
haha, i bought the carb today at work!!! dist cap rotor valve covers and spark plugs... forgot i needed to get an inline fuel filter and carb adapter!!! i will be running to schucks here in about 10 seconds so i will be back to update... the carb is now officially the most cromed out thing on your old truck kev!!! but i did get it started with some love and starting fluid... blowing deep black smoke like none other!!! carb/choke problems most deffinatly... will update in a little while... im out...

4x4_MMMH_4x4
04 Mar 06, 01:52 am
well, around 7 i started on the carb and worked on getting it installed, went into town got some parts to finish the install and some food... and she runs like a champ:allrighty: :allrighty: :allrighty:

BUT!!!

while it was outside after not starting for days and being flooded!!!   :banghead:

now its 1:49 pm i have figured out the cause of gas flooding out of my truck faster than a squirt gun...
my oil pan is now my second auxilary gas tank, and my timing cover gasket has become quite the spray nozzle...
now i need an oil pan gasket and a timing cover gasket!!!
hopefully i can scrounge up come change for those and some oil tomorrow... never done a timing cover gasket so this could be fun:( :( :(

help would be greatfull, as soon as i get up tomorrow...
give me a call anytime in the morning... i NEED to get it done well before 11pm because i have a babysitting appointment at 11pm...

oh and kev, you jinxed me :thefinger: "i have never had problems in the two years of owning it like you have":thefinger: dont sweat it though man im giving you crap, once i have all the little bugs worked out here and there it will be a good truck... the engine runs strong... tcase and tranny mark their spots quite nicely... but its going to get me from point a to point b... (busy tomorrow kev:cool: ) anyways im outtie

Timing covers aren't bad, 10 bolts and your good...it's getting to it that is sometimes the tricky part! Man I feel like a bum, but I have to get the last few things bolted on to my new motor tomorrow and be to work by 4pm. Have to have the motor done tomorrow because Sunday is go time, sorry I can't help.

4x4_MMMH_4x4
04 Mar 06, 02:00 am
its all gravy like train man... my biggest problem right now is money... i had my mom loan me 300$ for the carb because some guy came into work and priced out the carb i needed... the only one in town to i do beleive... my gf loaned me money to get a fuel filter and carb adapter, and i spent the rest of what cash i had on a cap rotor spark plugs valve cover gaskets and bambo panda... now if i could quit smoking all those 5$ increments would make me rich...

Timing chain cover - 1st remove oil pan
Then remove alternator, ps pump, and then the water pump.

If not, you will fill the oil pan with antifreeze - and ensue more cleaning frustrations.

Make sure you get as much antifreeze out of the ports and possibly stuff paper towels in there to keep antifreeze from pouring out while you are replacing the timing chain cover and oil pan. Just simply remember to REMOVE THE PAPER TOWELS before you replace the water pump.

I don't care how many problems this truck is giving you, I'm still jealous as all hell that you have it:( I saw it at Kev's and fell in love. Can't wait to see it out on the trails though! i didnt want your hopes to be up buddy:P i called you today around 8pm ish... noise is still there, has gotten alot worse, im begining to think its the case or the driveshaft... noises now happen while stopping, makes terrible terrible terrible noises... need to get it fixed and ditch the fulltime 4wd... i know the th350 to np203 has the short tranny shaft, is this different with the 205??? if i can find anysort of chevy np208 combo i have the correct driveshafts for it... i would like to go manual also seeing as i have a manual tranny lying around and can get some pedals and linkages hopefully... kevin has a 2wd sm465 which im hoping has the 10 spline output shaft so i can buy the 205 from highboy 76... i just need to get everything i need together and set up a time with kev to get a swap going on:D... my buddy has a 77 cab with doors i am probably going to take off his hands "freebie" as he is hauling the whole body and frame to the dump... his cab has less rust and the doors are in pretty good condition... might take the bed and the cab but i dont know how much work i am willing to do... oh yeah i forgot, he has a dual tank setup on it to:)... he isnt parting the truck until begining of summerish, so that will help out a bit for me to get the drivetrain figured out... and hopefully i can find somewhere to store the brown truck so i can start wrenching on it this summer and have it done... just need to order those front ubolts and plates... yeah im mixing threads...

main goal, is to get the black truck setup for daily driving and what gas mileage i can squeeze out of it and have a good powertrain and drivetrain!!!

4x4_MMMH_4x4
16 Mar 06, 01:36 am
mmm buddy of mine might sell me his th400 = np205 setup... going to steal a 203 from him first and rebuild the other th350 i have lying around... never done it before but hey it cant be all that bad can it??? do i need any special tools to rebuild a th350 transmission???

4x4_MMMH_4x4
03 Apr 06, 11:24 pm
drove doorless today, as for the tranny and tcase combo, have a th350 and np208 in the works, th350 in the black truck is going out... found some 3/4 ton axles so bigger tires wont be worried about after the brown truck is done... next on this truck i will be doing something similar to dusty's dodge... the doors... it really hit me as a cool idea, and it would be nice for summer, and for somthing to slap on the brown truck... im going to make a set of door hinges that are easy to take off so i wont need to pound rods and undo bolts to get the doors off... ahh enough... im tired and thinking...

4x4_MMMH_4x4
10 Apr 06, 04:17 pm
sigh, smokin last night, think the starter is just old and went bad... has been giving me problems... i think the smoking was coming from the fusible link as it is melted... it is also the only wire that is melted i must add... so im going to get a new starter and a fusible link and i will post up as to how it goes... sigh...

akdsmer
10 Apr 06, 04:26 pm
The starter doesn't draw it's power through a fusible link. The fusible links are just connected to the battery via the Starter cable. Not to dash your hopes, but I'd see what is on that circuit and find your short before replacing the link.

4x4_MMMH_4x4
10 Apr 06, 04:39 pm
i know it doesnt draw its power threw a fusible link, but isnt there a fusible link between the key and the starter in some route??? i traced it as best as i could last night while soaking wet and pissed... there appears to be one by the starter going to it... im hoping the starter just fried... i wonder if its because i have a tach, and a choke wire off the key wire if it just fried some wire somewhere???

4x4_MMMH_4x4
10 Apr 06, 11:39 pm
couldnt find any fried wires, sat under the truck in 3 inches of water while it was hailing and put a new starter in... no go... so im in deeper than i thought... who wants to buy a truck...

4x4_MMMH_4x4
14 Apr 06, 04:59 pm
well it might just be an ignition wire somewhere... i can turn the key on, and then stick a screwdriver to the starter posts and it starts and runs... sigh...

sevenslats
14 Apr 06, 09:44 pm
Neat. So yuo got it running?

ChevyKev
14 Apr 06, 10:44 pm
trace ignition wires or bypass it and run a push button start switch that only has power when the key is turned - very simple to do and fixes your current problem.

4x4_MMMH_4x4
16 Apr 06, 03:11 am
well i figured it out... i was wondering why i could start the truck in drive but not neutral... and i guess the nuetral/park safety switch shorted out... so i unplugged it and spliced the wires together...

oh and kev... note the for sale thread...

yeah...

ill have pics tomorrow hopefully...

need some hood pins to get rid of rachet strap thou...

16 Apr 06, 02:53 pm
You are not planning on putting that new-style clip on the front of the black bomber!?!

If you fix the body on that truck you'll ruin it!

4x4_MMMH_4x4
17 Apr 06, 03:46 am
kev the body kit has been in already since saturday night:P

it really looks kinda cool... i just need to do some metal work for the wheel wells and get the hood mounted in some fashion other than a rachet strap... but it does look pretty cool... its pretty awesome to stick your head out the window and see fenders...

on a bad note...
tranny is almost gone... i have to fiddle the shifter to get it to change gears...
so kev you want a front clip:D
(kev when my tax return comes in ill be able to pay you all the money at once btw... for the truck and th350 and 208)
