my name is bill kinzner and I have a 66 landcruiser. I'll be joining you guys this summer for some fun. I have to wait for the warmer weather since I haven't put a heater in yet. I have a 4" skyjacker lift plus 2" shackles. My cruzer has a 350 in it with headers, mallory ignition, edelbrock carb and intake and a beefy cam, just waiting to be installed with dual flowmasters running out the back. I have a bunch of little stuff to do before I start driving it. It will probably be a couple months until I have my roll bar built and then I can run with you. I posted some pics at http://members.cardomain.com/66cruzer :o

hi, I'm Eric Johnson. drive a 1990 Toyota Landcruiser, FJ62. going to put a 4 inch lift on it as soon as schools out, and some 33s. it already has some stuff, you might see it driving around fairbanks.

It's pretty capable now, just needs some more clearance and some ARB airlockers :?

hey,
my name is damien and i live in fairbanks, this is great to finally have a good group of four wheelers in the interior. i have an '89 heep wrangler (better known as mousee or money pit). fresh 4.2l with an rv cam, header, straight pipe, thottle body conversion,sm420 tranny, stock t-case with tailshaft conversion, lockright in rear, and mild lift for 33"ers in summer. looks like shat, but runs good. before summer i will be making the change to spring over with full width chevy axles and dana300 t-case and 35"s.
my wifes name is joanna, she has an '89 heep wrangler thats mostly stock (for now...) except for the 4" pro comp lift with 33"ers.
hope to see y'all on the trails this summer.

It doesn't look goofy, it just can't do jack! I sink faster than a stock TJ, because my springs (under the axle) shovel snow.
But it's still better than plowing into stuff on the road with the 33's...I've done that enough, thank you. I'll have the 33's back on in a month or so.
GIR...There's this cartoon called "Invader Zim"...Zim is an alien, who's here to conquer the planet earth. But he's not very well liked, so they gave him a helper robot (named GIR) who's made out of spare parts and trash, with a penny and a paper clip for a brain. It's always disobeying, forgetting what it's supposed to do, breaking down, etc, etc, etc. I figured it'd be a perfect name for my rig :ROL:

I backed it out of the garage yesterday and found I had no brakes. There's a nice puddle of fluid by my rf. I have to fix that and get my gas tank plumbed the rest of the way in and I'm game. :!:

Hey, I am John Wilber from Ft. Wainwright. I rode Manchu with yall a few months back, but I have been having massive trouble with my truck, and only now am I getting back in the game.
I have a 98 Dodge Ram 1500, 3in Rancho lift, 385 Discover tires, K&N, Flowmaster, and Hypertech chip. There are many many more mods planned for the future if I am ever able to having to repair the transmission and put the money into mods.
Hopefully I will be around alot more, and to know yall. Thats the plan anyway, but as always, its not really up to me, its up to the truck.

Hello everyone,
My name is Patrick Belle-Oudry, I live in Wasilla, right down the street from the B29/swiftwater creek trail head to be exact. I own two Land Cruisers and a older 4wd Suburban.
My Fj-40 is a Sep 74' it has a 1.5F / 4spd trans / 3 spd transfer, hot ignition, dual lockers, 4 wheel disks, power steering, full roll cage, Warn 8274, Spring over, RS9000 shocks, 35in MTR's soon to be bigger tires and regeared to 4.88, and other stuff.
My Fj-60 is a 85' Very hot 2F with lumpy cam, milled head, header, hot ignition, SM 465 trans mated to a NP203 gear reduction section and a Wardens billet aluminum transfer case total of 137x1 gearing w/ 16 foward gear choices, 4.56 axle ratio, full length roof rack, snorkle, Lincoln locker in the rear, FJ-80 electric locker in the front, 4 wheel disk brakes, LARGE 3 draw tool box in the back, Warn HS9500, on board air compressor, home made rock sliders, back bumper and front winch mount out of 3/16" steel ( a little over kill I think), 37in MTR's, sprung over, RS9000 shocks, on board shower, and other stuff I'm probably forgetting.
My tow rig is a 3/4 ton 89 chevy suburban used in combination with my 18 foot tandem axle trailer to tow my Fj-40. It has a TBI 350, TH400, NP272, cruise, dark tint, uniden cb w/weather band, Tecunsah prodigy brake controller, it pulls My Fj-40 at 60-65 MPH and gets 9-10 MPG doing it and about 14-15 MPG not pulling the trailer, better than some newer trucks with no payments and $27.00 a month for insurance. Gotta love it! and I can get parts from Walmart for it not like My Cruisers.
Thanks for letting Me ramble Hope to see you guys in the future.

44's are nice, but full size Chevys can eat them pretty quickly. If you are waiting to spend money to swap in a 44 wait a bit longer and make it a 60. Guarentee you won't regret it. I "upgraded" to a sim strength axle and now am upgrading again! would have saved a lot in the long run if I had found a 60 first.
Just my opinion based on experience. Glad you checked in to say hello. 8-)

My name is Dan and my family and I are due to pcs up their in 11 months. I am currently stationed in Heidelberg Germany. No wheeling here period!
I have a 96 XJ with the typical minor mods. I dont think it will come with me to AK. I will report with a stock Rubi(and a winch).
I am not into rock crawling and breaking stuff but I do love a good trail ride and the outdoors with no stinkin +++ europeans! Sorry, I dont want to offend anyone I am just fed up with germany.
My question's if you all dont mind anwering them are:
1. Is a hard top mandatory?(probably a stupid question)
2. Do you think a stock Rubi will be capable enough in your area for my son and I to enjoy some wheeling without massive carnage?(I hate to sound like a #%^*&!)

Welcome Tony, Matt, and Dan.
Dan, no, hard top isn't a necessity. Several of our members only run soft in the winter. Obviously it will be more insulating, and there's not the same chance of shattering a window, but run what ya got!
31's can do some of our trails. See "Trail Reviews" for trail ratings amd pics. Lockers will be a help.
Thanks for the reply!
Of course I will be upgrading in the future.

Hehe, I say the same about Toyotas, but truth be told, there's not a rig out there that doesn't need some help from an upgraded part from a rig with a superior trait. The best thing about AO is we are not a brand specific club. It brings knowledge and diversity to fend off evil, ignorant paradigms.

Steele
26 Jul 04, 10:56 pm
I'm Henry Cole... I'm a newbie at this, which you all would have noticed anyway even if I hadn't told you. ;)
My 1989 Isuzu LS is near stock, but still pretty capable as an off-roader. She has a 2.6L I-4, 31" Kumho tires, a K+N air filter, a Jacob's ignition, 4-wheel disc brakes, a wooden rack over the bed, and a compass on the dash, yet she was still able to pull a friend's Bronco out of a mudhole.
Unfortunatly, her uniqueness is a problem in itself. It is ++++ hard to find aftermarket parts for Isuzus, especially the pickups. There are a few companies, but they charge a lot of money. I can't just walk into a shop and pick something out, I have to order it by freight (like my new bumper, currently on it's way from SoCal, for $200 in shipping!). I ought to stop complaining, though. I'm sure there are many people worse off than myself, I just haven't seen them.
My plans... (mostly in order)
CalMini exhaust header
self-built cold-air intake (a poor man's intercooler)
2 PIAA 80 Fog lights on aformentioned bumper
2 PIAA 80 Driving lights on aformentioned rack
2 KC 100W lights also on rack
2.5-3.5" lift
33" tires
ARB air-locker or Powertrax No-Slip in rear axle
Headlight flashers
Turbo from an Isuzu Impulse (very similiar engine)
High-output alternator
TeraFlex Low-er range transfer case gears (3-1 instead of 2-1)
An air conditioner (I'll be going to grad school at U of Arizona in a couple years)
And lots of other stuff, but money and time are the big shortfalls here, and without much of either right now, things don't look so good.
Sorry for rambling... and I'll try to upload a pic soon... just have to find my camera.

Nice to have you on the board. Are you here in Fairbanks and if so how long have you been here and is it short or long term. Sounds like you have a good plan on the continuation of your trucks build up. Hope to see you out on the trails.

Thanks for the welcome. I am in Fairbanks, and for the long term, most definitly. I am planning on going to grad school in Tuscon the year after next, but after that, I will be returning, and I will probably come back here for the summers while I'm in Arizona. Summer heat there is unbearable for me. No mosquitos, though...
The way it seems now is that my goals for my truck are something of a 75-year plan. I just don't have any time during the summer, or any money during the winter. I'll figure it out, though.
EDIT: Found my camera... Now to figure out how to post an image...

Welcome, Henry. I believe yours is the first Isuzu on the forum!
I'm curios as to how well it will perform on the trails. I hope you make it out with us soon.
Your upgrade list seems doable. We all have a poor want vs $$ ratio in this area. And most of us are short on time as well. Best advice: Wheel it, decide what you need to upgrade soonest, save up for it, buy/install it, rinse & repeat.
I dont know if this is true with your year truck, but the Isuzu pickups tend to be the same thing as an S-10 just with different grille and taillights. So you might want to find a local S-10 and compare suspensions, if they match, you can use S-10 lift kits/parts.

27 Jul 04, 04:19 pm
Take another look at the pic, Erik. 1989s were slighhtly different than S-10/sonomas. But, yes, the newer body style are compatable. Good thinking.
Steele
27 Jul 04, 06:27 pm
Well, she is quite different from the S-10 and Sonoma trucks. Because of the close relationship with GM, there are some parts that cross over, but for the most part, everything is specific. In 1995, Isuzu started releasing a re-badged version of the S-10 as the 'Hombre' which never sold well, and was scrapped a few years ago. That must be what you are thinking of.
That is a good idea about the suspensions, though. Since both trucks had a common ancestor, they may be similiar enough that something for the S-10 might work.
I'm looking forward to "showing her off" with you guys. ;)

Those disc brake conversion come from backing plates from a D44 front chevy..then mounted chevy calipers 8) ..Or you could buy some other KITS out there..What ya think

Well I guess I should play by the rules too and post up in the newb check in post, eventhough I have been posting for a few days now. My name is Kyle Schumann, and I'm getting ready to move to Fairbanks in about a week now for college, from Sacramento California. The rig that I have in California is an 87 YJ. I have some pictures up on cardomain http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/488427 and before anybody starts to give me a hard time about how nice it looks I have had it for about 3 years, and in those 3 years I have been fighting with it to make it a reliable rig/DD and really didn't trust it too much to take it wheelin. Besides wheelin I'm also an avid fly fisherman.

Finally had to register to post in Sammi's thread. 76 CJ-7 slightly modified and mildly unique...does awesome in snow, even better in mud, soon to start working on some flexibility. The 79 Bronco Chassis and drive train were built for stamina...not flex...LOL. Hello all, my name is Jeff Town and I'm down here on Kodiak. Currently I just picked up a 1978 CJ5 that I'm planning on making into my trail rig. Right now just waiting on some Firestone 33x12.50x15 tractor tires to put on it. Hope to have it ready for when some of you come down over Labor Day weekend. Also have a 86' 1 ton dodge that was my "moosebuggy" in Tok. It has a 360, 727 tranny, 205 t-case, dana 60 front and 70 in the rear with 21.5x16.1 suregrip goodyears (42 tall 22 wide). Still not sure what I'm going to do with that but ya never now. No good pics yet of the CJ but they are coming shortly.

Yep, that is my buggy. I have it on the island now cause nobody seemed too interested in it. Winterraven (Fred) has got me thinking to do the full width axle swap with the CJ I just picked up and put those suregrips on it! The only problem would be that it would float if the stream crossing was too deep. Now I'm just getting the CJ ready for when you guys get down here.

Names Jeremy. Moved here a couple of months ago. I'm not a hard core wheeler. (Not yet anyways). I have a '96 Chevy Burb 1500. And shes stock. Looking for some ideas. I want to put a lift on it, but not extreme. Maybe 3", with some decent tread under it. I do go out exploring. And have been stuck good. Do you guys trail on a lot of tight trails? Or can I get back there with ya'll, too?
sevenslats
22 Sep 04, 06:08 pm
Hi Jeremy. Yes, most of our trails are tight. We've got a couple full-size rigs in our club, but we try not to pick on the fat kids. Any width rig is gonna get "pinstriping" on the local trails. You should be fine as far as being able to make the tight turns. Your breakover angle is what worries me. 'burbs are looong.
3" is a good start. People will tell you to go bigger. don't get in over your head. Wheel what you got, learn what your weaknesses are, and fix those. If it's clearance, lift it higher. If it's maneuverability, buy a shorter wheel-based rig. If it's traction, get more aggressive tires or a locker.
Welcome. Feel free to ride along with someone to get an idea of the trails we run. PLease visit our Gallery as well.

22 Sep 04, 06:44 pm
The trails are not as tight as they are overgrown. The trails we had in Washington where tight with big trees, no working through them. The trails here have wide bases but are so overgrown that even the Samis are a tight fit, but your rig will just push back the thin bush branches. Nice to see you posting on the board and hope to meet you soon. 8-)

22 Sep 04, 09:43 pm
Some trails are smaller and tighter than others. If you bring out the Burb it'll be "EDIT" the SECOND time for a rig that long. We have a couple of full size rigs in the club just nothing that long. Glad to see you on the forum and we are more than happy to help where ever we can. Check out the rest of the site and you can see the trails we run normally. See Up coming rides for the next trail. Hope to meet you out on the trail. We rate all the trails on the site also to help people select one to try or you can post up questions about a trail you want to try go let us know about one to check out. Thanks for checking in. Have fun wheeling just don't do it alone.

John, John, John. You've been away too long. :(
Twice on runs I've been on a suburban has rode the trail. On one they lost a running board (clearance or breakover angle, tough call. You'd have to see the obstacle they lost it on.), and twice they lost a bead (full-width axles attempting to navigate Jeep-width ruts).

Welcome! Cancel the order on the bra unless you are trying to (Edit: MESS) up your paint. Redirect that cash to the lockers gears and winch. That bra will do nothing for your jeep's survival in AK, only the drive in or out on the alcan. Are those the rdial or bias claws? Sure looks nice!

Welcome to another Chevy guy! Like the looks of your truck!
PM'd ya about the axles.
Do you have the tranny yet? Someone has an SM420 listed in the for sale thread - 7.13:1 granny low! Just a tad lower than the SM465!
Will adding add-a-leafs to an already arched spring kit for lift work? Usually add-a-leafs are to re-arch stock springs that have sagged and are negative arched to begin with, so they won't work with other than stock arched springs; plus they limit flexibility. Would you have to get add-a-leafs that are arched for your spring palck? Not doubting, just asking with my limited knowledge.
I would say that if you like the way your springs are flexing and just want to clear larger tires go with a 3" body lift and or cut-out fender flares that add room. Just a thought.
Again, Welcome!
ya know i thought about a body lift, but they just dont please me :? so i was gonna experiment, i might do a shackle lift of somesort in the front, pull out the el plasma cutter and cook somethin up... as for the tranny i doo have one... im just trying to figure out how to get the top back on the case right so she shift gears :AF: itll just about make your nose bleed
ChevyKev
24 Nov 04, 03:45 pm
The rear of the front spring already has shackles, so just getting some thick metal and making longer ones might work... Might need to re-align the pinion angle with 9" of lift - I assume you did that - prob with shims for the 6"...

i live in fairbanks, lived her e for bout 12 years or so. i seen this url on the back of a jeep about 1.5 years ago. been reading and following along the forum now since then. just never took the time to register till now. since ive seen some of your rigs around town. Ive got a 93 chevy 1/2 k1500, very mild, bout the only thing it excels in , is getting stuck. i enjoy fishing during the summer, with what time i have, construction work can leave little time for play. during the winters, i have an abundance of time off, to get stuck. meanwhile, ill work to get a pic of my truck on here.

Hello!
Always good to get more fullsizes, right Kev?
While goin' through the Forum topics it says to check in here if you're new to the site. I'm hoping to join the club soon. I have met a few of your members this past summer, driving around town, Delta mud boggs (third place in 4 and 6 cylinder class). Guess I should formally introduce myself. My name is Nate Lawson and I'm a summer laborer in North Pole. I own two great 4x4's and use them as much as I can.
First one...
'88 Suzuki samurai. SPOA, 31x12.50 15R Mud Rovers, 5.14 Transfercase gears, stock axles, '95 1.6L Sidekick motor with Dual Webber sidedraft carbs. and more smaller things. Those are the big improvements.

Second one...
'95 Hummer H1 Truck. Just bought it in February so I'm still getting to know her. 37x12.50 17R All-terrains (need more aggressive soon) H2 wheels, 6.5 (nonturbo) Diesel, 4speed auto, and HEAVY as HELL, but a BLAST to drive.

Nice rides, you got both ends of the spectrum covered Flyweight and Superheavyweight. I saw that H2 setting at Affordable a couple months ago. If you wheel that thing you should definately get the "Fat Kid" award unless someone steps up and gets that duece and a half off web tradio.
ive been looking at that stompr :rockin:
Thanks guys. I can't wheel the Hummer on my old trails since it's way too heavy. Only place I've been able to play is climbing snow berms at the movie theater and around town. Any suggestions to where I can really flex my stuff I would appreciate it.

A summertime fairbanks creek run or a redmond/banner creek run would be a good one with the hummer. I repeat; summer; like July/August..

That hummer looks suspiciously like the one a guy I knew in high school drove. He traded it into Anchorage Chrysler on a new maroon 4 door, and I saw it driving around Anchorage quite a bit afterwards.
I bet it probably is the same one. My brother in Anchorage saw a guy driving this same Hummer around down there and I even thought I'd seen it here in Fairbanks once or twice. I bought it from Affordable here, after they had bought it from an auction (at least that's what they told me). But now that baby belongs to me. :rockin:

welcome, it sure would be cool to see a non-mil hummer on the trail. Which motor and axles do you have in it?
It has a 6.5 Diesel (nonturbo) about 170hp and 270lbft torque. As for the axles I'm not too sure, if anyone knows or wants to look at it let me know. I believe that the rear is a type of limited slip, but the front I don't know. I climbed this rock slab yesterday at s-cushman and the rears were always diggin' in, but only one of the fronts would at a time, unless I snaked the wheels back and forth. If anyone has any information on these (supposedly just like the military ones) mine's a '95 and I'd really like to know more. Thanks.

It is a Zexel (formerly Gleason) TorSen differential. It is a torque biasing diff. Invisible on the street unlike clutch type LS diffs. Very good units. If a whee starts to slip, a little brake pressure will help by changing the torque bias, and both wheels will start tuning again. It's not a true locker but it is the best LS you can get.

Not many parts available for it yet, but a lift and 33" rubber is in the works, hopefully by the end of July sometime.

Heyyyy, I'm new to the site, Just picked up a used 2000 TJ Sport 4.0l 5MT, I know just enough about offroading to actually get offroad and get back on safely, I've taken a quick jaunt up by murphy dome and out down south cushman in Fairbanks, and I'm still getting the hang of it. As for upgrades, the rig came with 31x10.50/15 Goodyear MTR's, so I've got the beginner look and feel. I browsed the forum a bit, found the M&G thread but I can't make it to Palmer this weekend. Hopefully I'll find some times that I can meet up with some experienced people up here and get the feel for the area. I mean come on, this is Alaska, what better place is there for offroading? :yes1:

Hey everyone, just joined today. I live on Eielson and have a blue '02 Wrangler TJ Apex. Looking to do some trail riding, but am thinking I will have to beef up the rig a little from the stock setup to stay within sight of the big boys. Also looking for advice on a good 3" body lift. This is my first jeep, so any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, and I look forward to making it out to a meet and greet.

Welcome Spartacus! There are certain trails we run you could take your stock Jeep and do fine. Not trying to get you to not modify your rig - just saying don't let "stockness" stop you from joining in!

... Also looking for advice on a good 3" body lift. This is my first jeep, so any input would be greatly appreciated...
Welcome! We should probably start a new thread on this topic, but here's my advice.
Don't do a 3" BL. 1.25" max. If you want inexpensive, get a "budget boost" spring spacer lift. Much more effective, IMO.
Take your stock Jeep out, and see where it needs help. Most likely, it'll be in the ground clearance area. You can either get it in the air a little with a suspension lift (BL won't help with ground clearance), or just put some heavy duty skid plates on it. The advantage of skids before lift is that the skids will always be beneficial. You'll always want to go with taller springs, and outgrow your first lift very quickly.
