Well as many of you know I traded ChevyKev some Chevy stuff for a 83 J-10 that wouldn't turn over. Little did I know it was a ticking time bomb. I found that the bell housing had cracked and fried the clucth so it wouldn't turn. I Welded the bell house up and droped a new clutch in it. Thanks to NBM's help we slaped the tranny and T/C back in in no time. The thing was running like a champ. I was getting better gas milage in the FSJ then in my YJ. But one day it started knocking and I didn't even make it out of Moose Creek when a rod when't a flying through the oil pan. I still drove it home minus one rod. I also have 5 other AMC 360 here around the house. So I took one in to my friends shop(akjeep) but no good. So I grabbed a different one. Also from Kevin who got it from John. This one also had a broken rod but was board 40 over and had new freeze plugs. So this is the one getting the build. The crank and cam are at the shop getting shiny. The block is tore down and has been cleaned. Next thing is to hone the cly's and start slaping back together.

I have the cam and crank back. The crank is 1010 so I need to find a new set of bearings. Block it honed and ready to put back together. I also have a set of 33" MTR's for it. I will need to put a bit of lift on it to make them fit nicely.

I finally got some where today. Monday my gasket kit finally came in but instead of having the mane bearings in there it had rod bearings. I already had the rod bearings so I still needed 1010 main baring. Napa said they didn’t have any in the state and it would be a week or so. Somehow the next day they showed up at the shop. So today I got the crank, pistons, cam, oil pick up and oil pan on. I would be happy and call this have way, but this isn’t the motor out of the J-10. It’s an extra one I had, so I still need to pull the blown one out. If all goes well I maybe pulling the old one out next Monday.

The last two days I got a lot done. The 360 is all put together except for all the accesses that I have to take off the blown motor when I swap this one in. I had a Mopar timing set that I was putting on yesterday and I was taping the crank gear on when the cam gears lower teeth just snap off. I would have photos but I also dropped my $2,000 camera and broke that. We ordered a new one for Napa but it wouldn’t fit the Mopar set. I had another Napa timing set here so I used that one today. I hope to move the J-10 to the shop by Monday and get it running by the end of next week. If I can do that it’s on to the Sandrail and then getting the lift for the J-10 so I can fit this extra set of 33” MTRs on it. I already have the rear locked and need to put the L/S that I have in the front.

Kevin and I got the J-10 on his trailer Saturday and I’ll drop that off at the shop Monday morning. I’m still waiting for the bell housing to show up. The one in there now is cracked. I welded it up but it didn’t hold up to well. I turned the key and the truck started so I drove it out in to the street where it died. I used the starter to move it all the way to the trailer ramps and it just stooped. No nothing, all power was gone. We then used the YJ to winch it up and chained it down. Thanks to Kevin for all your hard work. :yes1:

Well A lot has been done but it’s not finished yet. Just picked up the intake from the machine shop. 4 of the 8 pistons where gone. One was really broke up into small chunks, the other 3 cracked and this thing still ran with no oil! Photos to come, Dave ha them on his camera. I have the 33” MTRs mounted up and ready to go on, next month I’ll order the lift.

The 360 is hanging in the engine bay ready to get hooked up to the tranny. As soon as we move some of this real work out we should be able to bust it out. Hook every thing up, let run for about 5 min., drain the oil then with any luck I'll be driving it home to night. ;D. I hope..

Update::

It didn't happen. The tranny and motor just wouldn't go together in time. Monday I'll try it again.

To make a long story longer! @*!%
The motor swap didn’t turn out as I had planed last winter. It started right up and run great until it reached operating temp where it would start to have a knock. Still drove fine, lots of power and no hesitation. The starter wasn’t engaging right and the flywheel was trashed from it. Before we got to the flywheel the rear main oil seal was gushing oil, so it got parked since I was fed up with it. The MJ now sits in the J-10’s place and the J-10 in the driveway once more. Yesterday I pulled the driveshafts, T/C, Tranny, bell housing, clutch and oil pan. I have all the parts and will start to reassemble in a few days. Problems along the way where lost or stolen key (I remember leaving them in the truck) missing gas cap so I will need to drain the tank to make sure no one put anything in it. I had to pull the steering column and replace the lock cylinder just to move the truck.

I don't envy your project list. But I hope you get a trail rig again soon.

I just finished up putting the J-10’s rear main, oil pan and clutch parts on. I might need some help in the next day or so to get the tranny back in. If anyone is free please let me know. I rechecked all the rod cap bolts while I had the oil pan off and found that they where all not to spec so I re-torqued them. I hope that was the reason I was getting a knock.

Man what a day. Scott came over around noon to help me throw the tranny in. Ended up doing most of the work his self as I chased Ian Speed around. We got it almost all back together. We ran into a snag with the top of the tranny cover. To remove and install the transmission you have to pull the shift forks & shifter off the top of the tranny if you don’t have it on a lift. Well they got bound up and we couldn’t the shift gates right. I think I have it right now after 4 hours of messing with it, but the battery was dead and I need to start it to make sure.

The J-10 once again breathes fire. Oh and don’t trust Scoot he dose lousy work:rolleyes: . I replaced the started with a new one. I still have a knock in the motor. Kelly any chance we can hook up one day soon so you can have a look-see? It has Dave and I stumped.

Did you have new pistons and wrist pins installed?
What all motor work did you have done?
What about bearing clearances? Did you have the crank turned? New? plastigage?

Not wanting to ask dumb questions, just trying to help figure it out.

Just new rings, bearings push rods and such. Cam and crank machined. We didn’t replace the cam bearings since they where new and miked OK. Wrist pin might be it. Stop by or give me a call when you have a free second and I'll run by so you can here.
