View Full Version : Towing with my Scrambler...

One of these days I will have the restoration done on my Amphicar and I'd like to be able to tow it with the Scrambler. The Amphicar weighs in around 2300 lbs. I'd like to use an enclosed trailer to tow it in. Probably a custom aluminum trailer. I haven't towed much over the years and was wondering if this is asking too much from my Jeep. I'd really like to be able to take it down the Alcan one day... Any thoughts? I'm thinking a double axle trailer with a weight distribution hitch. And maybe airbags on the Scrambler. Don't really want to do anything that will hurt my off road flex though...

I'm sure you could do it but at the sacrifice of any good gas mileage. A double axle trailer itself, even with aluminum sides would probably guess in the neighborhood of 2500 pounds. Not put your 2300 pound car and you're looking at pulling almost 5000 down the road. Like I said, I'm sure your Scrambler could do it just fine, but you won't get very far between fillups.

You could do the airbags in the back without hurting your flex. Since, when the airbags are deflated, they don't get in the way of the leaf springs, your flex shouldn't be affected at all

I dunno how the airbags would stretch when a particular wheel was in full droop. Would the bag act like a limiting strap?

I've looked up vehicle tow ratings before at thewebsite for trailer life magazine. I dont' think they go back to 1982 though. The dealer should be able to tell you the tow rating of that beast.

No, you can't do that to the airbags, it will ruin them.
