View Full Version : Am I asking for trouble?

If I go with a rear spool?

Who's driven one? Not on a DD, but more like a OAWD (once-a-week-driver). I've already got a lock-right in the front end.
My rear diff is open right now, and that fact is eating away at the back of my mind.

And would my scout 44 hold up to a spool with 4.88s and 35s?

I've heard of a problem with rear spools on Jeepsunlimited where a dude is driving around with an 8.8 spool and it lifts one tire in the front when he turns due to the torque. I wouldn't spool it if it's got to be driven on the street. They also mentioned that it kills springs like nothing else.

Talk to Mousee... I think his YJ was a spooled 44 daily driver. I'd do it myself. Just depends on how much self control you have on the street. Drive with a light foot and you could really enjoy it on the trails.

The zuki runs a rear spool. My last zuki had a welded rear. Both were semi daily drivers (having to take Rachel to daycare every day limits this ones use) and both worked great. I get chirps in the parking lots, I leave little black marks on my concrete pad when turning into/out of the garage. The zuki is lighter so the tires slip easier, so keep that in the back of your mind. The Zuki axles and gears and in no way strong, so your 44's should not have any issues. Tire composition would make more of a difference than the size (other than obviously width).

Eats springs? Hmm......Yep, mine are all bent up....

Mine wont' lift a tire until I get my anti-swaybar installed.

I will never ride mine with a locker or open again. I drive (drove, it's in the shop for some black ops :)) it every day on and off the street. it's a 10 bolt with 14.50's. I highly recommend it, it's very predictable. no more ratchet, no more one wheelin', no more shifting going down the highway. very predictable on ice too. It's great to scare little old ladies in the Fred Meyer parking lot going around corners at like 1mph  besides, if it's just a oawd, then what'd'ya got's to loose?

I didn't realize they were that easy to deal with. I was under the impression they were a PITA.

Will there be a difference in leafs vs coils? Both of you with experience have leaf springs.

I definately don't like the unpredictability of spider gears. I will say that for sure.

hmm, I may have to get a spool for my 9" now that I hear that it's not too bad.

I think the lighter the rig and higher the tire pressure the less dramatic a spool is. A good buddy of mine has a zuki with narrow 32 BFG mud terrains and with 30 psi, the tires don't chirp bark or squeal at all.... With lower pressure they do a little bit.

I have that mini spool from Eric in mine right now and I love it. I have not had it in the summer yet but on the snow and ice it is great. As someone said very predictable on the snow and ice. I can make it slide if I want to but I have to want to slide:D. with the snow it lets the tire slip so there is no hopping or noise. The only problem I have had is turning into my neighborhood is a bit tricky. the corner is real icy so it wants to push the front instead of turning. I just gas it a little and that breaks the back loose enough to make the turn. I'll be taking it out the first week of next month if you want it.

With all the issues you have had with lockers I was waiting for you to go spool. I say do it. I spooled a Bronco, and my 71. Its a whole lot cheaper than lockers, more predictable, and more bulletproof.

Ok, due to my inablility to search the net (90% of sites blocked by the man) I'm going to ask the question, What is the difference between a spool and a Mini spool?

Spool replaces the carrier, mini spool goes in the carrier like a lockrite. Basicly the same thing as a locker and lunchbox locker. One replaces the carrier and one replaces the spider gears.

My 91 XJ is welded in the rear. And it is/was a DD Only thing I had to complain about is the parking lot noise draws alot of looks.HWY driving never a problem,Off road great. It was a D35 with small tires.

I can't say what the additional stress on the springs is like, but with all traction devices, if both tires can rotate instead of one, you will have more spring-bind and the chance of bending springs. A anti-wrap bar could be easily made by Holeproof and would eliminate the spring problem. I know I'll be adding one before the next set of springs are installed.

Only when built/installed wrong.. They are mounted near the center of the axle, with proper mounting points and proper length, they don't hurt it a bit, but they do prevent the axle from twisting. There are a few difference styles and you can debate the merits of each design.

I have 4 of those. Hence my question about coils vs leafs.

I do think that Coils will hold up better than leafs will. I did not have a problem with my leaf Springs warping or bending. Mousee Had some sag after 170k miles of beating.

From what I got from that JU thread, the 5-link design we have promotes the effect even more than leaf springs...

"the effect" of lifting a tire? I ain't scurred.
the effect of worn springs? I won't cry if I lose an inch in the back. I'll swap L>R.
