I had it towed up to Lisa's deciding if an Atlas II will be worth Paying twice as much for,Post up your Opinions, Atlas II Or D-300. I'll get pics when I push it in the Garage today.

If you can afford it do the Atlas. If not, I know where there are two D300's near Anchorage that need pulled and could be had pretty cheap.

SO new Atlas II with what gear ratio? vs. rebuilt? D300 and what gear ratio? tell us what options exactly are you weighing.

There's two other threads on here about d300s.
Holeski can tell you all about the atlas.
I wouldn't waste time on the 231, unless money is a concern. You could probably talk Mark or Mel out of theirs a little early.

21 spline doesn't count.

If money's an object, but you refuse to keep the 231, you could do a stock 300 and upgrade it later.

If money's no object...Stak 3 speed! :D

By the time you spend the money building a D300 and getting it put into your vehicle you are about $1,000 shy of an Atlas. Now if you change the D300 to 4.0:1 then you are even closer to the Atlas. Advantage of the Atlas is you wont have to do any work and spend time rebuilding it. They are both shorter than the 231 I believe so DS length will be an issue.

Unless you use a NP231, you'll need at a minimum a new rear DS. I do know two folks that converted from a NP242 to an Atlas and didn't have to change the front DS.

yes, driveshaft length is an issue. For a d300,
the flip kit twin stick is 700, IIRC
4 to 1 is 1200
driveshaft modifications 400 ish
200 for the T case
120 for the body lift for a TJ if you dont alreayd have one

so right there you are in 2600. I think the Atlas was in the neighborhood off 3500 to 4300 dollars. Then you still have driveshaft issues.

I'm right down the road from you. Let me know when you need help heaving that thing up into the frame.

FWIW: A zuki transfer case can be held up in place with one hand....If you want to reduce weight, I can probably scrounge up a zuki case for you.....:D

I figured about $1400 for building the D300 that was getting one very cheap though. An atlas can go for as low as $2300. Now upgrade the splines, lower gearing and other stuff will raise it quite alot. TJ has a BL so he's good there. I wont be doing the D300. But I say it all comes down to what you want and how much you want to spend.
