Is there any diffrence in the 258`s used in AMC cars from those used in Jeeps ? What years of 258`s had the strongest cranks?
I believe 79 and older had the 12 counter weight crank. Not really any stronger then the later ones but it is supposed to run smoother. I don't think there were any real big changes over the years. Watch out for the 232 and earlier engines. The look identical to the 258 but with a shorter stroke.
Here's some good info....

Craig i thought you had referenced a stronger crank before and had even located one in a vehicle in Delta. Was this just the diffrent weighted one?
The one in Delta was in a Pacer. It was a running car that had been parker for awhile. Would have been a good crank for a stroker but I didn't want the pacer...
If your considering a stroker I have allot of info on building them. Maybe I'll do a write up on it... I have a line on a set of pistons that will eliminate the pining problem most people run into when building these engines.

I may go stroker if my 4.0 block is ok, but am thinking of just putting my 4.0 head on a 258 instead, then getting the Injection setup.
You'll love that injection! Kelly has been a great help to me in regards to making the stroker IM legal. Drop him a line and see what he says. Once my stroker is installed it will be considered an engine swap and the MPI kit will not be needed for IM. Everything has to be from the same year engine. 94 in my case. If I can come up with 94 injection stuff I may sell the kit. The kit is based on a 94 wrangler so it's a wash either way for me....
Of course I'd ask anyone interested in buying my kit to confirm IM issues with Kelly first....
If you are talking about the mopar MPI kit it will be compliant as would some versions of the Howell tbi kit. It should even have the sticker that says so in the kit. CARB certified means it also flies here.

Yea thats what I have. The Mopar MPI kit. Am I right to assume that I wont need the MPI kit if I use all 94 engine components when I install the 4.0 in place of the 258 in my Scrambler?

Craig do you mean you have all of the 94 injection stuff? I am pretty sure you could use all that with the engine and be leagle. Then sell me your Mopar kit ;D

Don't have the 94 stuff yet but I'm thinking about getting it if it will be legal on my 4.0. I think it will though so yea I might want to sell the kit.

I'm not Kelly but I did stay at a Holiday in last night. If you find a complete 94 and swap everything over, I can promise with 99.99% certainty that it will be found compliant. Infact you may not even need "EVERYTHING" ie charcoal canister and what not, you'd actually have to talk to Kelly about the specifics of that, doesn't even need to be 94 but pre-OBDII makes things much easier as it's a return style fuel system and doesn't have near the on-board diagnostic crap. I've got the FSM on CD for when it comes time to start cutting wires, when I get around to buying the remaining few pieces for why junkyard swap.
