Is that something that might wear with ???? miles or is it always a sign of bad bad things?

:google:, my perennial teacher. AMC engines are prone to wearing distributor gears if run a lot at low RPM like off-roading and cold weather warm-ups. The gears rely on the timing chain to sling oil up and at low speed that doesn't happen too well. There's a tech article I need to find again where a guy ran a small oil feeder line to the side of the timing cover from the pressure gauge sender and used a welding tip as a fitting to get a small stream shooting right at the gears at all RPM.
No parts store in town could seem to find replacement gears for some reason... Summit to the rescue.

Cool, I know on a 454 or a 350, that's usually a really bad sign.
Glad Summit can hook you up.

Yeah, if the distributor gear on mine were ground into the camshaft like Chevys I'd be replacing the shaft. This one slips right off the end. http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/msd-8007_w.jpg

Went through 2 sets in three days. This solved my issues.
