Since it seems that not many people check the wanted forum too much, I'll post this here so I can get a bigger viewing.

First off, does anyone have a sandblaster that I can borrow to clean this york compressor with?

Secondly, what's the best place in town for lengths of air hose, fittings, disconnects, gauges and other miscellaneous hardware?

Lastly, where's the best place under the hood to mount an air tank? One writeup I've seen had a kilby 2.5 gallon suspended from the support bars in the back, but it's right over the engine and I don't want it to heat it up too much, reduces the amount of air it can hold at a certain pressure. there are other writeups I've seen with a tank mounted on the driver's side inner fender, but last time I was in there it was pretty crowded in that spot.
Any other suggestions or experiences would help alot.

Alaska rubber can hook you up with most any type of hose and fitting you want. Some of their stuff is on the spendy side, but overall pretty reasonable prices and they have everything you could possible need fitting/hose wise.

alrighty, got the bracket and clutch pulley in today, I'll need to borrow an adjustable spanner wrench if I can't remove the center bolt by hand.

This is getting to be a huge PITA. None of the stores i went to had everything I needed, and noone knew wtf I was talking about. I'm about to throw this ++++ thing out the window and forget about it.

dude, relax and take a breath.... if it was easy everyone would do it. Re-read the stories, get with someone who knows fittings and you'll figure it out. I plan to use my A/C compressor for the same reason, and even with all the write ups I know it's gonna be a pain. With that said... wanna sell that york compressor?

I think I got everything figured out, I just made the mistake of going to the stores without my list of stuff I needed. Now I have that list,a nd I'll be going sometime next week. In fact, I may go to Home Depot tonight. I found an oil filter at sears for 30 bucks, that was cool. I'm thinking of just getting a block of aluminum and drilling the center out and some holes along the top for my gauges and pressure switch/relief valve. I just need a drill press and a bit long enough.

I still need to get this thing cleaned off though, it's filthy.

guess this means the compressor ain't for sale :p Good to hear you're back on track. Was you'rs a non-AC jeep? I'm just using the factory A/C compressor... it's good for what I'll use it for. Yorks are the best, but I don't need anything that serious.

TJVigilante
11 Feb 06, 06:50 pm
yeah I have AC, didn't figure that I could use the existing compressor....well at least that allows me to keep AC in case I feel like getting the system recharged.

gamble71
11 Feb 06, 06:51 pm
AC is for wimps... use your factory compressor and sell me the York :D

Wimps and/or female family members, I fortunately have two of them. No wimps though...

I have a wife and daughter.... they already know, if you're in the exploder A/C ain't happening. God meant for us to commune with nature. Not to live in some enviormentally controlled box. Hence the reason man was born naked :o

Please don't demonstrate that, thanks.

Got back from Lowes, Home depot didn't have squat and lowes had even less, but they had good prices on what they did have so I got 50' worth of hose, a couple of disconnects, a valve for the oil return, an oil filter that I may take back because I found something else at Sears earlier, 8 bolts for the top of this thing to replace the rusted nasty ones on there after I clean it up...an air chuck that only cost me 5 bucks(dual nozzle, w00t) a couple gauges, and some other things I can't think of now. I'll head down to Alaska rubber sometime tomorrow and see what they have along the lines of pressure switches and a manifold for all my stuff.

akcj5
12 Feb 06, 10:06 am
AK rubber is probably not going to have a manifold or pressure switch. They have all the fittings and hose you could need, but I don't recall them having manifolds. (I could be wrong.)

I think I got mine from grainger or mcmaster-carr

AIH had one that had everything I needed but it was friggin expensive. Just a rectangular piece of aluminum painted black with tapped holes in the ends and top. 45 bucks. I can get a better looking one from Northerntools.com for 20 bucks plus shipping, still would be less. Anyone around here have a drill press I can use to make one? Just need a solid piece of aluminum 1.25x1.25x6" and a 6" 3/8 drill bit, plus a 1/4" bit for the top holes, and a tap.

Figured that once I get this thing done, I'll save up for one of these (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Omega-AH-300-Chrome-Triple-Train-Horns-150-db_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6763QQitemZ803883039 5QQrdZ1)
to help relieve the stress of putting it together.

Now I can be one of those trendy people with a video on the 'net!!!

york is pretty simple all in all. (granted my cj was MUCH easier than your TJ) but overall, it will be a bolt in process. The hard part is finding the right bits and pieces to make it all come together. Just step back, take a breath, look it over again and figure out your next step. Its been done eleventybillion times, plenty of others out there to look too when you can't figure it out!;)

TJVigilante
18 Feb 06, 02:02 pm
i'm fine with putting it together, it's just getting the right friggin parts. With all the money I've spent on overpriced pieces at the two places up here who sell them...I could have had a bolt-in viair and just dealt with it. That ++++ compressor has some missing pieces too, a few of the bolts on the head are gone and I don't know if I need a gasket for it or not. I can't find the place to put that little screw...++++.

there's nowhere up here who sells a pressure switch OR check valve. who the hell do people go to to buy these parts? ++++ pressure release valve at alaska rubber was 19 bucks, it's 5 bucks online. Every store has maybe a 2ftx5ft display for fittings and everything else. I hate shopping for stuff in Alaska, seriously.

I've asked if anyone knows anyplace with a sandblaster or a drill press so I can get some of this junk done, nobody answered. I'm spending more money than I have to get this ++++ thing to work and it's still far from complete. I still need to get wire, a fuse, and a relay for this thing too. Good thing I already have a switch.

akcj5
18 Feb 06, 02:18 pm
when I did my oba, I didn't buy anything but the pulley locally. Nobody had what I needed. It was cheaper to look around online and pay shipping than to buy stuff here. As for the missing bolts, they are the same thread as the rest of the head, but the lenght will depend on what type of output you put on there. FOr the oil screw, look up "york oil fix" on the internet. Its been written up eleventybillion times. Its really simple, locate passage, tap passage, locktite a machine screw in there. I think you are overcomplicating this abunch man.... relax, its straight forward.

BTW, my manifold was only a couple bucks plus a couple for shipping. I think you would be better off looking on line and buying some of this stuff.

akcj5
18 Feb 06, 02:18 pm
Oh, and as for gasket, they probably make one, but some high temp rtv works fine.

TJVigilante
18 Feb 06, 05:28 pm
that's a plus. Took back the overpriced oil filter I got at lowes and got their cheaper 150psi one...I'll just keep the system at 140psi. Along with that I got some dremel attachments that will hopefully do the job in cleaning the thing up, some bolts for the head, a coil hose, and another couple fittings. I'll go to Sears and get their intake filter and then back to alaska rubber for a 1/2-3/8npt reducer for that, and to return the 19 dollar release valve and order one from online for a quarter the price.

Pressure switch and check valve are all that's left.

Does anyone have an account with grainger? They're wholesale only, and they have all the parts I need at great prices...this would help me out alot. If mousee or Holeski can (maybe) get an account with them, as long as there's no fee or minimum purchase thing, I'll gladly pay a bit over cost for the parts.

Check northern tool. My dad, who does a lot of work with air and hydraulic stuff, buys things like this all the time from them. I'm going to call him before I leave for Korea and I'll ask him to see what he can get and who to get it from. No promises but might work. I know northern tool has the stuff though.

Couldn't find much for the check valve. but you could call them. 1-800-221-0516

Check this site out also http://http://www.pneuaire.com/checkvalves.html mIght have what you are looking for.

I can get a pressure switch for 23 plus shipping from www.4x4rockshop.com and the same thing from grainger was like 17.

These look pretty good, great price, just not sure how the push-on fittings work, guess I have to get a splice fitting for the tube to put into the connector?

I got my pressure switch at tesco on cushman. Pressure setting is variable. I think it was around ten bucks.

Now I have to call the bank to make sure they get their ish straight with my address.

HIghest thing tesco has is 40 on 60 off, nothing really in the 140psi range that I'm hoping for. Frontier plumbing the same....the guy at alaska rubber told me another place that might but I can't remember the name.

found it, it's aero, and they have some stuff, not sure about the check valve...sounds like he knows what he's doing and what's required, so I'll take a stop by there in a little bit and check it out. It's looking up!!

Hmm. the one I got is variable and I set it at 120psi off. It comes on about 100ish. I should have tried to find a p/n for you.

you can also get viair pressure switches off Ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VIAIR-PRESSURE-SWITCH-w-RELAY-CHOOSE-YOUR-PRESSURE_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33586QQitemZ80 39819275QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Aero had pressure switches, but their 90-120 was 46 bucks, I can get a Square-D off of www.4x4rockshop.com (http://www.4x4rockshop.com) for 30 shipped. They had a check valve, but it was a 1/4" npt(largest he had) and I'm needing a 3/8" npt. I wonder if any of the dedicated plumbing shops carry them...Lowes had pressure switches but were 30-50 and their check valves were pathetic.

Thanks for the link, I may go with that one instead if it's the same price shipped.

Well, broke down and got a 120-150 psi pressure switch and check valve from the site mentioned above. Wondering if the switch is adjustable, it'll be sitting there running with the release valve popping off both at 150 psi, that'll be an interesting thing to watch, wonder if that'll cause any problems. Either way, I have everything I'll need except for the tank either on order or in-hand, and some wiring to go from the pressure switch to the switch in the cab. Cleaning it tomorrow, going to get some RTV for the head as well as a set screw for the hole in the top, and hopefully the head bolts all fit right.

Update:

It's all coming together, returned the overpriced relief valve and smaller-than-needed check valve, got some additional fittings that would make the job much easier, and an intake filter from SEARS. I thought when I got the added fittings that the filter would be 3/8 NPT, but it's actually 1/2" and that means i need to go BACK to alaska rubber to return one of my 1/2-3/8 reducers and get a 1/2" female coupler....and they really don't like doing exchanges or returns, I had to talk to the manager 3 times to straighten the relief valve exchange out. First they wanted to just give me my new stuff which cost less than the relief valve, and tell me that they'd do the credit to my card tomorrow, and I had nothing in writing that said that. Pretty much the expected me to just hand the piece over and trust them to do the return on my card....nuh uh, no way that's happening. they weren't too happy with me, and I have to go through it all over again...sigh.

Now check this out: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93186

This thing looks and specs close to a Viair 400P; $10 says it came out of the same factory in China. And it goes for $69. Now THAT is a good deal.

Now, sure the york will kick it's +++++, but for $69 bucks, you could be wheeling instead of wrenching....

.....can't get the old clutch and pulley off, I need an adjustable spanner wrench AND NOBODY IN TOWN carries them. Is it so much to ask for a store to carry tools?

akcj5
05 Mar 06, 10:33 am
You really don't *need* the spanner, get clever with some small rope and wrap the clutch against the direction your cranking. Put in the clutch bolt and drive it off....

TJVigilante
05 Mar 06, 04:19 pm
The pulley spins freely on the clutch....I need to put some bolts in the front of it and get a lever on them or something.

akcj5
05 Mar 06, 04:41 pm
put some juice to it, it locks up fine, or take some flat stock and drill a couple holes for your bolts.
