How are you liking yours, John?

Info: (EZ-Locker and no unlocking hubs installed in front D30)

Well, all I have done so far is drive it in circles at work in 2Low and it turns nice freeing up the front end. I can now also remove rear drive shaft and run front wheel drive only if I shred the rearend on the trail without losing all my Transfer case fluid.

Actually, I heard only YJs and early XJs puke fluid. TJs are sealed. could be just a rumor...

How does that work? The driveshaft shouldn't be anywhere near fluid. Or is it coming out tapped holes?

The yoke on the rear is a slip yoke. Yoke goes to u-joint goes to drivshaft. The slip yoke moves in and out of the TC as the Jeep moves. Most of the time you will have a sliding yoke on the driveshaft, This is not the case on the YJ and XJ. So now if you bust a u-joint or rear drive shaft, you could not remove it and just drive with the front since the silp yoke would come out of the TC and drain your LUBE. I like that word. SYE kits puts a fixed yoke on the back of the TC and you get a normal rear driveshaft.

Anyone fill in anything I may have missed.

You got it Holeski. TJ's do the same thing. If I pull the driveshaft with the stock slip yoke i would have lost fluid. The output side of the transfer case does have fluid in that gets there by a oil pump in the bottom of the T-case. I installed the Slip Yoke Eliminator (SYE) so that it now has a sealed CV shaft style connector on it.

Well, transfer case should be here today. I'll get this flip kit thrown together, and put it in place of the '231. After that, I need to measure for 'shafts, and get them made.

I'm really antzy to get this d300 and tear into it, but I know AJ is more ready for his tires (which should also be here today).

If not let me know..

Haven't decided. I guess you could make me an offer...

It won't be for sale fpr a couple months anyways. Gotta make sure there's no bugs in the d300.

Well, blast from the past here.
With my free time this week, I've been working on my baby a little. Been busting my +++ tapping 4, 1/2" holes. Ever seen a 1/2" tap? it's a monster. She's slowly coming together.
Sorry, no pics. Digital camera is in Seward currently.

Allright John, and anyone who wants to crack a whip. Sunday November 7th, 1 pm, my garage in North Pole.
The idea is, that if I set a date, and have someone nudging me when I slack off or get distracted, I'll actually get this project finished.

I'll snap some pics tomorrwo so you know what my goal is, where I stand, and what's left to complete.

Unless you're lucky enough to find an XJ with the NP242 in it. Sealed, and if you remove the rear shaft, no fluid loss. At least such was the case with my '00. Found that out while doing my SYE install.

Slats, good luck with your D300 project. :yes1:

I made it 1 so NASCAR would be over, but if it's after church for you guys, great.
So you know it, there's not a whole lot more than 3 people can do. Now, if you want to stop by and take some pics or :wupped: you're more than welcome to.

Gary, is that a part-time case?

Why the SYE?
A 4dr XJ should have plenty of rear shaft length, even with lift for 33s.

.

It's not just the NP242's that are setup like this Gary. This was a change during the mid '96 model year for the XJ's, both the 231 and 242 were changed at this time. WJ's also have this design, likewise with the TJ's.

The '95-older 231's and 242's had the slip yoke setup...

A 4dr XJ should have plenty of rear shaft length, even with lift for 33s.

2dr and 4dr XJ's sit at the same wheelbase. So there's no difference in driveshaft length there. I personally would not go any higher than 3.5" of lift on a '95-older XJ without modifications to the the driveline. I know that my XJ is in need of an SYE - the u-joints are maxed out when the suspension is at full droop. Not good.

a '96-newer XJ is even worse, the tailshaft design on the t-case was changed, which made for an even shorter driveshaft. In my personal experience w/ these at the Jeep dealership I worked at - many of the Upcountry-equipped XJs of this vintage suffered from driveline vibes from the factory! I would be hesitant to do anything more than a budget-boost on a non UC-equipped '96-newer XJ because of this...

lol...and I guess that's my $.20

I had pretty bad vibes after lifting the '00. It would vibe when just in gear and rolling in drive, and get worse as I went higher. Had to drive it home from a buddy's house across town at 20 mph at 11:30pm. The SYE and TW shaft cured them.

Got some work done on this thing. A lot of work, actually.

I had to strap the thing to the corner of my workbench while working the tap. Big thanks to Nate for the use of his tap handle. works much better than a crescent wrench and a cheater bar.

Well, John came by Sun, and froze solid while I wrenched on the Jeep. We got the '231 out, but while looking over the '300 before installing it, we realized the input shaft wouldn't turn without major motivation. It was getting late, so he took off, and I tore it apart until I figured it out. Got 'er all assembled again, and all the shifters out of the Jeep. Sometime this week, maybe Thurs, I'm gonna get the '300 installed, and measure for driveshafts.
John snapped a few pics, I'll have to upload them sometime.

d300 is in!!!

front driveshaft is 4" too long. rear is the wrong shape, and 7" too short. Didn't get shifter linkage adjusted yet, and tehre's still a floorjack in place of a tranny mount, but we're getting there.

i know u gain strength from the 231 to the d300 but do u gain or loose crawl ratio ?

sevenslats
22 Jan 05, 08:21 am
Lose.
NP231 is 2.72:1 4:1 kit ~$1100
d300 is 2.63:1 4:1 kit ~$700

Other benefits, besides strength, are longer rear driveshaft, twin sticks, lower COG...

Okay. I drove it to work today.
Nervous. I didn't realize how much more noise a gear-driven case generated. There's also a lot of gear lash when torque is applied/removed. Quite disconcerting.

I still don't have the center console installed. I can't seem to adjust the shifters so that everything will fit in the factory holes.
I may need a body lift in the future, since the way I have the d300 clocked causes it to rub the floorpan. I'd pound the floorpan out of the way with a hammer, if only I could fit one up in there without dropping the 'case again.
I NEED a custom skid plate. The stock one just looke silly under there now. The shape of this iron case is totally different than the alluminum one before.

yeah, me too. it took me awhile to get used to it. i finally had to go to a rubber (don't laugh) tranny/tunnel cover to hush the gear noise. the t/c would touch the cover and transmit all that gear noise through the cab.
MUCH better now. airtight AND quiet :ROL:

I'm gonna have to try that. Number one, though, is get that center console back on. That'll help a lot, I'm sure.
