These guys (at Port's) know their stuff. That is where I have all my machine work done. Very knowledgeable.

We should see if they will do one for us. Some of us won't be in town on the 1st

I'm already on that!

I am sitting in Port Machine Shop's office as I type this. They are more than willing to do a class for us. We simply need to come up with a date. (preferrably a Saturday)

Also - if someone has an engine they want rebuilt, and will have them do the machine work on it they will rebuild that engine for our class.

Basic cost for V-8 prep work, engine kit, and heads reworked is about $1000.
So free labor for you! :D

When do we want to do this???

Talking with Rick at Port's, he has received a greater response to his free class than he ever thought he would. He is expecting anywhere from 12-24 folks! He really wanted it smaller - like 6-8 - so that it could be more hands on. So if 6 or 8 of us want, all we need to do is pick a date (maybe a few in case he has plans.) If more folks want to attend then we might be able to have 2 classes - or squeze a few extra into that clas.

Ole mentioned that he may have a 351 Ford to take them up on the build-it-in-class-free offer.

BTW - he liked our website!

if we do groups of 8, then that would be $125 a person for the engine rebuild if people were splitting costs, if thats the way you would want to do it?

or not?

how were we planning on doing this, also, is there anyone who would do a tranny rebuild class? cause i would really dig that! i can call around and find out if you guys want?

AKMark

Transmissions are quite a bit more tricky then engines. But yes, I'd love to get in on a tranny rebuild class myself.

ChevyKev
23 Feb 08, 12:10 pm
The only cost is if the engine that gets built is one of ours that we keep. That cost would be paid by the person who is keeping the engine. If they build one they have in the shop and we simply watch and learn, then there is no cost to us.

I may know someone who would do a trans class - but it'd probably cost us his labor and the cost of a rebuild kit. As well, it would have to be a trans he has done before. I know he has done several Fords and Chevies, don't know about Dodges. I should be talking with him again next week.

i am officialy volunteering my engine if everyone is ok with that and i wanted to know what all the prep work entails

ChevyKev
25 Feb 08, 01:28 pm
Engine Prep = block cleaned, checked for cracks, bored, honed, crank re-ground, cam bearings installed, old pistons pressed off of rods and new ones pressed on.

Heads = cleaned and checked for cracks, new valves, seats, and guides, reassembled (may include new springs, I can't remember.)

Normally it is also beneficial to have the tins and possibly the intake cleaned as well.

Well if we don't have a motor I have one that needs rebuilt. But since I'm not pressing ot get it done if someone else has one we can use theirs. I'd like to attend but not sure of what dates I could actually go.

ChevyKev
27 Feb 08, 05:21 pm
What if we mentioned 29 March or April 5th and let Port's decide which day would be better for them.

You would need to take them the engine first, so they could get the machine work done. Also, you may need to tear it down for them. I'll call and see what condition they want the motor in if they do one of ours.

I posted this to Norakor. Thought you might want to add my feed back to your Port thread here. It was really good and I'm sorry I didn't see any AO faces there but I think your all out on the stampede trail so it's understandable... :)

You guys missed a good one. :( They did a Chevy 350 from start to finish. It was pretty informative. I'd built a few engines in high school and a few recently but this was a great learning experience and great from the question and answer part. There were about 10 of us there so it wasn't crowded at all and we were encouraged to get our hands dirty and ask as many questions as we wanted.

Rick tells me there doing another on the 12th for AO. I think they had the stampede run going today as none of them made it either. Maybe another one later on if there are still more people interested. I'd expect it to be open to all though so I'd highly encourage anyone here to go if you can.

so whats the condition do i pull it or drive it

ChevyKev
05 Mar 08, 05:29 pm
I talked to Rick and Randy yesterday at Port's

April 5th will be our day.

The engine needs to be pulled out and disassembled at least a week beforehand (10 days prior would be better.) All engine pans, parts, and hardware needs to be taken to them so they can clean and prepare for assembly.

I'll call later tonight and or tomorrow with more details.

Bumpity bump.

Port Machine shop at 10 AM, should be over by 2 PM.

again, there is no charge for coming to this class, however... I'd like everyone to bring an extra 1 liter bottle of Pepsi (Rick and Randy's favorite drink) to give as a "thanks"

You also might want to bring something to sip on yourself.

I had listed 6... if there are no others I was wondering if a friend of mine could attend (a former foster kid - 16 and racing on the dirt track) ... any objections? It's fine with me either way.

Directions to Port's:

At Steese and College, take college toward and past Sam's. Keep going past the Johansen and when you come to a light at Antoinette and Margaret (it is an offset intersection - Margaret Ave goes to the right, where McKinnely Animal Hospital is, and Antoinette is on the left) Go left on Antoinette Ave. Then make your first right on Andrew St. It is the first house/shop facing Andrew St.

ChevyKev

The class is this Saturday, and yes, you are welcome to attend.

However, the engine is already there and machine work was done. I'm sure they could give you an estimate on the cost of machine work and rebuild kit for your though. :D

Very good class, great information, everyone involved in doing the different steps...

This was very cool.

Maybe next T-shirt order we could get one for him - these are normally for "members only" but we have given a few as "thank you" gifts in the past. Thoughts???
