I had a question about swapping a 98 cherokee engine that was 2WD, into an 89 4WD cherokee. The reason is... My friend just rolled her 98 and is prolly going to part it out, while my other friends engine is going to crap every time he runs it so hes looking for an easy swap. I was wondering if the swap would be an easy 1 without making an major modifcations to the engine mounts/transmission/transfercase, ect...If anyone could give me some addvice that would be much apperciated cause we could start working on it as soon as possible so we could hit the trails.

The big thing is and someone chime in if I'm wrong, the 89 is a Pre H.O. engine and the 98 is an H.O. engine. You may have to swap the Computer in order for it to work. The other factor would be what transmition do they have, Standard/Automatic. If they are both I6 motors they will be an easy swap but the computer/ignition system would be the only issue I can think of, maybe the vaccume system. Anyone else want to chime in on this?

Talk to me, I've done this swap before. In facy, I'm doing it again soon on the Comanche. I told her to try & keep the Grand if the buy-back isn't too steep. The swap can be trickey, but it's definately do-able.
Oh yea, WELCOME to the Forum!!!

I am with Tom, although I don't think it matters as mch of the pre or post H.O.(91 was the cutoff for pre, IIRC). What will matter is the OBD II in the 96 and up versions as opposed to the OBD 1 in the other.
PCM/O2's/TPS/CPS/ignition may all need to be converted...

I do know that the intake and the TB are different between the two. I'm not sure when they changed the ignition system, other then that I can't think of anything that would set them apart.

Beware of the E-sockets!  :banghead:
The top 2 trans to engine bolts have a torque's head - stupid * shaped head that takes an E-socket to remove. But you can't see it - so you can try a bunch of other sockets that won't work before you figue it out.
JEEP is a 4 letter word. :pissed:

You'll need the entire cooling system out of the 98, if you didn't know that already.

Thanks for the advice everyone, yea there both straight sixs with auto tranys. If all i need is a new ECU an O2 sensors an the newer cooling system, then its gonna be a good project for this winter.

Maybe try taking everything out of the 98 - wiring, computer, etc. so you'll basically have a full turn-key engine, then you won't have to sweat what's compatible.
OR
What's going bad on the 89? Just too many miles? Could you keep most everything in tact in the 89, swap it all onto the 98 block/head, and part out the rest of the 98?
