Okay I know this is for a tow rig/DD but thought it was interesting info.
My tow rig is a 2005 Chevy 1500 Avalanche 4x4 (non Z71)
It has a 5.3L motor, 3.42 gears, and a 4L65 trans.
When I got it the dealer had put 305/40R22's on it. Very bling bling, but very heavy and a bit too much for my taste.
My gas mileage in this vehicle has been anywhere from 13 to 17 with the best being 17.3 going to Travis AFB and back which is about 200 miles round trip.
Not too bad for a 300 hp gas powered machine, but yesterday I got rid of the 22's and put a set of plain old chrome stock rims and 245/75R16's on. The tires are less than .1 inches shorter than the 22's were. They are over an inch narrower and don't rub the rear inner fenderwells when the suspension compresses.
Well, had to go to Travis again today, so I topped off and headed out. When I returned I topped off again to verify the numbers as the automated mpg/and fuel totalizer hasn't been inaccurate before, but I didn't believe what I was seeing.
22.5 mpg on the computer with the cruise set of 67 as much as I could. There's lots of traffic and about 15 of the 200 miles was driving through a city to get from the hwy to the AFB. When I hand calculated it, I got 22.3 after topping it for almost $2.00 worth.
That's as good as our Minivan which doesn't ride as nice and isn't as comfortable.
I wonder what it will do when I'm driving between 55 and 60 on the highways back home?
I'll report back when I get an estimate of my regular city driving as well.
