I saw a guy on ebay selling some synthetic line 3/8" with 15,000 breaking strength that has a braided cover he uses on his winch but the kicker is it's made as a rebar substitute for concrete on sea walls and things like that that flex. Has anyone heard about other people using this stuff ?

Then again he was using it on a suzuki so maybe it's only suitable for ATVs. :D

I ran a synthetic line called Amsteel Blue on my winch up there. It worked great for me. As with the wire stuff, it's not a use-and-forget material, it will last much longer if kept clean.
I had the 5/16", but when I get my next winch I'll get 3/8. No issues with the strength, it just felt puny in my hand.

I like my synthetic line - but don't know if the stuff you're talking about is the same...

syn winch line is actually the same stuff they use on boats, mainly sailboats. it you check out some boat places on line you will find you can buy it cheaper from them. amsteel blue is one of the brands i have seen them selling. you just have to make sure to get the right weight rating and number of braids. I think it is 12.

Cool I had a feeling they were related to other things.

Just to clarify, I'm not looking for the low buck unproven alternative for winch line. I wouldn't use something I wasn't 100% sure in. I don't want to put myself or anyone else in danger.

The great thing about synthetic is that when it fails, the line just falls to the ground, with a cable, usually some metal is destroyed and a few people are close to getting mortally wounded.

I've seen cable go through both front and rear windows of a pickup cab during a winch pull. Driver was smart enough to get his head down before it came whipping through or he would've lost his head.

Personally, if I get a winch, I will run cable initially until I have enough saved up for synthetic, much better in the long run. My $.02, also as a puller of line during one of our major winchfests, it is much easier to pull synthetic line all night than cable.

Sorry this is not true, Mike and I both have seen it sail when I broke mine. Granted it didn't have much force but it still all ended up in my grill and it broke right at the back of the vehicle i was hooked to.

Well after seeing a couple break myself, I can vouch that I have never seen a synthetic fly with the force of steel cable when it goes. I have seen the line move, but with no force, and it didn't damage anything.

When cable goes, something normally gets ruined.

Yep it did recoil. But it was more like a snake recoiling after a strike and landed on the ground right in front of the Jeep. It was nothing like say if you used a ractchet strap or something.
