Hey everybody, name is Tim and I have been in Alaska since April. I have a 87 Samurai (Mike's old rig) and can't wait to get out on the trail. My wife Christina loves offroading as much as I do and so do our 2 labs. Anyway's can't wait to attend the next meeting to introduce ourselves and meet everybody. Lockers are on the way for the Samurai and I will probably need some help installing them if anybody is interested in helping. Have to get ready for next weekends mudbogs.

welcome! I could help pull the carrier out during one of the evenings this week.

there are some guys in the club who have "fancy/necessary" tools to put the lockers on and line up the gears correctly.

Nice to see you found the site. It was nice meeting you at the car show. We'll let you know when the next meeting is as soon as we know.

    Welcome to everyone.

blacktaco - I haven't been to land between the lakes in many years! Very cool pics.
I see great hope for 2010 - seeing as I spent the first day of the year working on Jeeps listening to country music - the year can only get better from here!

Welcome, I hope to see you at the Bogs. Does anyone have a extra seat? I might race mine if I put the lunch box in the front.

    Re: Newbie Check-In Thread!!

Hello, I'm driving up to Alaska (for the year) right now. I'll be in Anchorage, but my gf is in fairbanks and I expect to visit there.

I have a 2010 FJ Cruiser, pretty much stock. I use the FJCruiserForums, but have a question about "winterizing" it for Alaska so I thought I'd come to the experts. I'll post that in the 4x4 subforum.

For now -- hello! I'm in Alberta tonight. Should be in Fairbanks in a few days.

---------- Post added at 08:03 pm ---------- Previous post was at 07:38 pm ----------

I guess I'll post it here since it doesn't let me start threads in any forum.

I want to get some heaters (engine block, oil pan, battery, etc) put on the car, and have its fluids changed for Alaska. I don't think this is super necessary for Anchorage, but I will be visiting Fairbanks so I'd like to make sure the vehicle can start.

The local Toyota dealership, Kendall, has a "package" for $495 that includes engine block heater, oil pan heater, battery blanket, -50 coolant and fluids swap. That seems like a lot of money, so I thought i'd ask here to see if there are any shops who can do (probably a better job) for less.

    Re: Newbie Check-In Thread!!

Welcome to the site. Areas of our forums are closed to the public.

As for winterizing your rig that is a big debate among many people. There are a lot of different opinions on it. The dealers are the most expensive. there are other shops in fairbanks that do it for less. American Tire does it for less and is a vendor for Arctic Offroad. I don't know about the anchorage area. Wayne,fix_it, might be able to steer you somewhere down there or check out AK 4X4 Network Most of us do the work ourselves. I've never paid anyone to do it for me. Key part is looking up which freeze plug to replace with the block heater. The pan heaters are as simple as putting them on with silicon. If you use a battery pad just sit the battery on it. A blanket just wraps around or hook up a trickle charger. It's your choice on these. If you are going to be in fairbansk and want to do it here you can let us know and maybe some of us can help you out or steer you in the right direction.

If you want to do it in Fairbanks just let me know. I've got an 08 FJ, and I'm also on the blue forums. I'd be happy to help you do it yourself, and it shouldn't cost even half that for parts. Just a thought, and enjoy your time here in our beautiful state.

    Re: Newbie Check-In Thread!!

Thanks all. I might just have the dealer do it for simplicity -- sucks to eat another $200 on it but at least it's all done there in one shot, and I don't have to spend time shopping for the parts and what not.

As for Alaska, I'm hoping to get into some basic / beginner four wheeling with my (again, stock where it counts) FJ up there. Primarily around anchorage but maybe a little when I visit fairbanks.

Is this the forum for that, or is there a better place to meet up with people who wouldn't mind introducing someone new to some basic trails and such?

    Re: Newbie Check-In Thread!!

Like posted above check out Alaska 4x4 Network Most of the folks on here are down in the anchorage, mat-su, kenai and all southern areas. They can also send you to a good shop down there to save money on the winterization. As for up here in the faibanks area, this is the place. I'll send you a pm on more info.

Thanks. I actually went to Alaska 4x4 last night but it said then, and still says now, that "Sorry, registration has been disabled by the administrator."

So I'm not sure what to do --- if I can't register I can't post.

  15. #1185
Hmm. I'm not sure what that's about. I'm just a regular user there. Is there a contact link?

Nope, not that I can see. You can check it out for yourself at http://www.alaska4x4network.com/register.php

It must have just happened, as their "newest user" signed up yesterday afternoon. Looks like I just missed closing time!

Maybe someone who is a member there could post and inquire about it? I can't even get in to post a question. They might have tripped some switch and not know about it.

I'll pm him and ask about it.

    Re: Newbie Check-In Thread!!

    Just my opinion

I have been using the heating pads for my batteries in all my vehicles, I thought they worked great until I melted the bottoms of my 2-two month old interstate batteries in my Diesel. I now am converting all my vehicles over to a trickle charger, a little more, but in the end it would of been allot cheaper then replacing the new batteries after only two months.

    Re: Newbie Check-In Thread!!

Another good idea on the winterization is to just have the dealer do a block heater for you. You can just stick an oil pan and battery heater on yourself for a few bucks in parts. Don't forget to say hi when you come through town. I'd love to wheel with another FJ owner sometime.

    Re: Newbie Check-In Thread!!

hey man, like Jeremiah said, it took me maybe 2 hours to get my winterization done. I have an '06 taco and most of the stuff is the same. Jeremiah correct me if I'm wrong but you don't even have to remove a freeze plug for our truck, there's a built in slot for the block heater and it just clips in. Let me know if you want me to help, it cost me under $150 to do my truck.

The Alaska 4x4 network is closed to any new registrations. If you aren't already a member, your pretty much out of luck unless one of the "guys" invites you.
They are trying to make the site better. I'm not sure exactly how they figure this will work, but it's the path they've chosen.

Well, that sucks. So much for meeting some people and getting into the scene. Be sure to thank them for me.

    Re: Newbie Check-In Thread!!

what started the whole limited access to 4x4 network was folks trying to close off trails was using our write ups and pictures for the state meetings for reasons to close the trails to motorized use .

then they would have lurkers trolling our site trying to pick nasty fights so to limit the drama brook closed it off to approved known wheelers or unless recomended by other wheelers like a sponsor program ..

    Re: Newbie Check-In Thread!!

Oh rough -- so people were using the free access to the forum to shut down trails? Well, that's a risk, I guess, but it still sucks. Agree that's a tough situation to deal with.
